The Fellows Society welcomed students to the inaugural "Careers Outside of Academia" discussion and luncheon series titled: “Your journey to your current position” with Dr. J. Robert McClure, president and CEO of: The James Madison Institute.
Dr. McClure’s talk covered: 1) reasons he chose a path outside academia; 2) finding/creating a position; 3) day-to-day work; and 4) Advice for pursuing careers outside of academia. The event was well-attended and had a lively Q&A session after the talk.
Dr. Bob McClure is the President and CEO of The James Madison Institute (JMI). JMI is a nonpartisan, public policy research organization based in Florida; founded in 1987, JMI is a statewide organization with members in Florida, across the country and around the world. JMI’s ideas are rooted in the U.S. Constitution and the principles of economic freedom, limited government and private property rights. Labeled a “heavy hitter” by Florida Trend magazine, the Institute’s work has appeared in every media market in the state, as well as nationally including USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, Politico, the Washington Examiner, Drudge Report, The Hill, Newsmax, and more.
As JMI’s President and CEO, Dr. Bob McClure provides an expert’s perspective on current issues facing Florida- the third-largest state and a policy bellwether for the nation. A frequent commentator on television and talk radio, he is a regular contributor to The Hill and NewsMax Magazine. Dr. McClure has lectured and been published nationally on numerous policy issues including property rights, tax policy, health care, education reform and has testified before dozens of governmental bodies at the state and national level. Dr. McClure was recently named one of the 100 Most Influential People in Florida Politics. He has also served on the Florida Committee for the National Commission on Civil Rights. Appointed by Governor Jeb Bush, he served on the State of Florida’s Education Strategic Planning Council and the Florida Elections Commission. He also received Governor Rick Scott’s Business Ambassador Award for advancement of free enterprise and served in an advisory capacity on the transition teams of both Governor Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Bob is a graduate of Furman University, received a master’s degree from Florida State University, and completed his PhD in policy at the University of Florida. He was inducted into the Blue Key Honor Society.
